Is Microblading Really a Dying Technique? Understanding PMU Misinformation

Mar 20, 2026

The permanent makeup industry is constantly evolving. New techniques emerge, terminology shifts, and social media trends often shape the conversations artists are having online.

But with that evolution also comes something else—misinformation.

In a recent episode of the Tatter-A-Fact PMU Podcast, Teryn Darling sat down with award-winning PMU artist and educator Brittany Wallins to discuss one of the most debated topics in the industry today:

Is microblading really becoming obsolete?

The answer is far more complex than many social media posts would lead you to believe.

The Rise of Microblading

When microblading first exploded in popularity, it revolutionized the brow tattoo world. Clients loved the soft, natural-looking hair strokes, and artists were excited to offer a technique that mimicked natural brow hair.

Microblading quickly became one of the most requested services in permanent makeup.

However, as the technique spread rapidly across the industry, something else happened as well: training quality varied dramatically.

Many early artists were trained in extremely short courses that didn’t fully cover essential topics like:

  • Skin anatomy

  • Pigment science

  • Color theory

  • Skin undertones

  • Depth control

Without a strong educational foundation, some artists struggled to produce consistent healed results.

When Poor Education Creates Industry Myths

When clients began experiencing poorly healed microblading results, the blame often fell on the technique itself rather than the training behind it.

In reality, many of the problems seen in early microblading work were the result of:

  • improper pigment selection

  • incorrect depth

  • lack of skin assessment

  • unrealistic client expectations

The same issues can happen with any PMU technique when the artist lacks proper education.

This is why it’s dangerous when the industry begins labeling any one technique as “bad” or “outdated.”

Permanent makeup is far more nuanced than that.

Microblading, Nano Brows & Technique Versatility

Today, artists have more options than ever when it comes to brow techniques.

These may include:

  • microblading

  • nano brows (machine hair strokes)

  • powder brows

  • combination brows

Each of these techniques has its own strengths and limitations.

Rather than focusing on which method is “better,” experienced artists focus on something far more important:

Choosing the right technique for the individual client.

Skin type, age, oil production, previous tattoo work, and lifestyle factors all influence which technique may produce the best results.

A skilled PMU artist understands how to evaluate these variables and adapt accordingly.

Why Versatility Matters for PMU Artists

One of the biggest takeaways from this podcast episode is the importance of versatility.

Artists who limit themselves to only one technique may struggle when encountering different skin types or client preferences.

On the other hand, artists who understand multiple methods can tailor their approach to each individual client.

This adaptability not only produces better results—it also builds long-term trust with clients.

The Future of the PMU Industry

As the permanent makeup industry continues to grow, education will become even more important.

The most successful artists will be those who:

  • continue investing in advanced education

  • stay open-minded about different techniques

  • focus on ethical client care

  • avoid fear-based marketing

No single brow technique defines the industry.

Instead, permanent makeup is built on a toolbox of techniques, each with its own place depending on the situation.

And when artists focus on collaboration, education, and respect within the industry, everyone benefits—artists and clients alike.
